Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the Belonging Quotient?
Simply put according to creator, Abam Mambo, the Belonging Quotient or BQ is the ability to make people feel like they belong. This could be in a workplace, a school, place of worship, neighborhood or even your family and relationships. In a more robust context, she describes the BQ as:
The individual or collective willingness, ability, commitment and action plan to create a space or cultivate a culture in which people feel a sense of belonging.

2. What is Workplace Belonging?
Workplace belonging is that sense of connection, acceptance and membership in the workplace. It is often referred to as belonging at work. While workplace belonging has been around for a long time, the pandemic brought it front and center in discussions about the workplace. A Great Place to Work defines it as:
“An employee’s sense that their uniqueness is accepted and even treasured by their organization and colleagues. Belonging is an accumulation of day-to-day experiences that enables a person to feel safe and bring their full, unique self to work.”
3. Why is Workplace Belonging Important?
Here at BelongingIQ, we believe that Belonging is the most human, relatable and effective culture enabler and business driver overlooked by organizations and leaders. Research shows that Belonging boosts engagement, performance, productivity, collaboration, wellbeing and retention. Moreover, Belonging is a critical aspect of diversity, equity and inclusion intitiatives because it is the hoped-for outcome.
It’s for this reason that we approach Belonging as a multipronged, but impactful solution for employee disengagement, low productivity, burnout and attrition.
4. Is There A Connection Between Belonging, Diversity and Inclusion?
Yes, there absolutely is. Diversity is about recognizing and acknowledging employees unique characteristics. Inclusion is all about actively engaging employees regardless of background into the workplace without a need for assimilation. Meanwhile, we acknowledge and celebrate Belonging both as the aspirational outcome of diversity and inclusion, but also as a catalyst for engagement, productivity and retention.
